September through December is paperwhite season at Blue Raccoon. Planting the bulbs indoors is a holiday tradition for many and we love forcing them into just about any interesting container this time of year. Paperwhite narcissus (Narcissus papyraceus, if you're feeling fancy) is a perennial (at BR we find this label a little dubious - we like to say the p'whites are a 'one and done' kind of thing) bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean. The historical and symbolic significance of narcissi is wide ranging, but the plants are perhaps best known for their role in the Greek myth of Narcissus, who, overcome by desire for his own reflection, dies and is transformed by Zeus into a white flower.
Paperwhites are incredibly easy to grow indoors and super low maintenance. They can be planted in soil or stones and take around five weeks to bloom. The variety we carry, known as Ziva, grow to be about 18" high and produce clusters of delicate, fragrant white flowers.
